If you are not familiar with how the Internet really works, you may want to learn more about IP addresses. IP stands for Internet Protocol, and these numbers are more important than you think. This web address is actually covering up an IP address. Though it is easier for you to remember the word name for your favorite web site, the computer must have the series of numbers to bring up the site that you want. That site is stored on a computer, much like yours, but with huge capacity to save data and hand it out to whomever requests it.

You may not know it, but you have an IP address that identifies your computer and where you are. Everyone has this number, and that means you can find out something about any IP if you know where to look. If you get an anonymous email, meaning one that has no name or address that you recognize, you can still find out more about who sent it to you and where they are. That may help you identify who sent that communication.

When you look at the top of an email, otherwise known as a header, you will see there are some IP addresses listed. These IP numbers are in a string, usually with four sections, separated by dots. You should concentrate on the first one listed, or the very last one. That can tell you something, but not always a lot. At the very least, you can see Internet service provider, and area from which the email came. You may learn, for example, that an email came from the Washington DC area, and that the service provider is Verizon Wireless.

You want to see what you can learn by going to a site that will give you a reverse email search. You can try to search the address itself, or you can see if they have a tool that allows you to track by IP address. You may not get a name, but you can get valuable clues that identify from whom the email came.
